RIBEX 2007 - Almost, but certainly not a Washout!

Enduring wet and wind almost conspired to make this unique three day event a washout. Friday and Sunday finished early due to the wet and blustery weather.

Saturday with more becalm weather conditions gave the early birds a chance to join the welcoming flotilla to see the return of Sir Robin Knox Johnson from his solo world circumnavigation as he took an eleven gun salute from the Royal Yacht Squadron as he sailed up the Solent enroute to Gunwharf Quays at Portsmouth.

Remarkably this challenging weather ensured that the casual visitor to the show stayed at home, allowing the serious prospects a chance to test the boats in the conditions for which they are designed, resulting in some very lively business for the exhibitors.

The show attracted a diverse range and style of these types of craft. The most remarkable comparison was the difference between the smallest RIB at the show, the diminutive and sexy looking 4m Flatacraft RIB Tender, and the massive masculine giant of a beast from the Royal Dutch Lifeboat Service., an 18.5m (62ft), 28 tonne, 2000hp llifesaving RIB.

As usual many makes and models were on display, substantially of European origin with some representation of RIBs built in South Africa.

The tented village hosted several stands showing the different types of power units available for these fast powerboats from the stables of Suzuki, Evinrude and Yamaha. Supporting products of marine radios, waterproof audio systems, helmets and more where also shoreside.
