Most years see Douglas Crocket BIBOA and Peter Zurrer ASC organise a return to West Coast Scottish waters during early spring. This year was no different, but for the exception of the remarkable weather.

This event covers two weeks allowing for participants to join in at any stage. This year was no different but with one major exception. While the majority of the UK and mainland Europe suffered from cloudy skies and heavy rain down pours. The West Coast, in particular Oban, was enjoying record high temperatures and hours of sunshine. So who ever said the sun shines on the righteous was ever so correct! This must have been one of the best weather windows I've seen in the past twenty years, with benign seas, clear skies and visibility some 40-50 miles.

Some nine RIB's participated. Several boats had traveled from the South and South East Coasts which was good to see, but the furthest without doubt was Peter's RIB 'Highlander' which he brought all the way from home, Zurich, Switzerland.

A contingent of Ribcraft made up the majority of the fleet but Chris Strickland in his world record breaking Scorpion also joined in the fun.

Participants:
1. 'ARRIBA' - Marlin powered by a 300hp Suzuki piloted by Douglas Crocket, crewed by Bongo Brian and Jamie.

2. 'HIGHLANDER' - Ribcraft powered with twin Yamaha 80hp piloted by Peter Zurrer, crewed by Engelbert and Andreas.

3. 'HOT LEMON' - Mike Deacon's latest (fifth) rib carrying the same name. This model previously being the high quality homebuild Scorpion 'Due North' built by Gordon Turner. Mike generously carried various crew to ensure as many ribsters enjoyed the unique qualities of his latest acquisition.

4. 'LA BAMBA' - Ribcraft powered by a 140hp Suzuki and piloted by Bernie Hanreck and crewed by Bob.

5. 'SEAHOUND V' - Chris Stricklands world record breaking Scorpion, crewed by Helen, daughter and visiting friends.

6. 'JUST LOOKING' - Ribcraft powered by a 100hp Suzuki and piloted by Margo (sister of Douglas) and Lesley.

7. 'VENOM' - Cobra powered by 140hp Suzuki and piloted by John and Annie Griffiths.

8. 'BLUE RAY' - Avon Searider powered by 70hp Suzuki and piloted by Trevor Goddard. Trevor's valiant efforts to cover some remarkable distances each day and keep up with the rest of the fleet unfortunately resulted in the need for a replacement gearbox by the end of the first week.

9. 'SUNSHINE' - Ribcraft powered by 140hp Suzuki, piloted by Martin and family crewed.

The first part of the cruise was based out of Dunstaffnage Marina, near Oban. The second part from Holy Loch Marina, Sandbanks on the Clyde. Seahound V & Hot Lemon went by sea around the Mull of Kyntyre with the remaining fleet trailering from Oban.

I've put together three small slide shows (click links below) from the days that I was onboard 'Highlander' and 'Hot Lemon'. Hope you enjoy.

Isle of Mull - Iona - Ulva
Grey Dogs - Corryrvecken - Jura - Eilaen Mor McCormick
Lismore - Loch Leven - Fort William - Mull of Kintyre
